EXAM TIPS:

-Top two causes of dementia are Alzheimers and vascular dementia
-Glossitis is a smooth red and sore tongue (inflammation), it can occur in conditions such as pernicious anemia (B12 deficiency), celiac diseaser, Sjogren's syndrome, chemotherapy, allergies
- Suspect acute appendicitis with positive Rovsing's sign
-Meniere's disease causes sensorineural hearing loss (inner ear only).
-Thiazide diuretics reduce urinary calcium excretion, it can be used to treat hypertension in older women with osteopenia/osteoporosis 
-Koplik's spots (small white lesions/papules clustered on the buccal mucosa by the posterior molars) are pathognomic for measles (or RUBEOLA). Do not confuse it with rubella.
-Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP or B-type natriuretic peptide) is a sensitive test for heart failure.
-Secondary amenorrhea is when a woman stops to menstruate for 3 or more months. Most common cause is pregnancy, other causes are breastfeeding, stress, low body weight, excessive exercise, PCOS, pituitary tumor (check for high prolactin levels).
-Kava (or kava kava) can damage the liver. It is an herb used for anxiety and insomnia.  Do not combine with CNS depressants, hypnotics, or drugs that can be  hepatotoxic.
-Ankle-brachial index (ABI) is used to help with diagnosis  and stratification of the degree of arterial blockage (PAD, PVD) in the lower extremities.
-Positive Kernig (hip) and Brudzinski (neck) signs, suspect meningitis

I am currently board-certified by both the ANCC & AANPCP as an
FNP-C, FNP-BC and AGPCNP-BC. I have been teaching my NP review courses since 1997 and practiced as an NP clinician since 1991 (I was an RN for 8 years before I became an NP).

​I have been an adjunct instructor and clinical preceptor for NP students. I have also been a preceptor for medical school students.
I received my BSN degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and my Master's in Nursing from Florida International University. I am the author of two best-selling NP review books in Amazon.com.

I was invited to write the Dermatology chapter for Hector-Dunphy's and Winland-Brown's "The Art and Science of Advance Practice Nursing" (1st ed). I have to say that my most challenging job is motherhood. My oldest daughter is now a young adult and my other one is a teenager. My house has high levels of estrogen. Even our dog is a girl (a Shiba inu). The only guys in my home are my hubby, one hamster (Dorito), and my male betta fishes (fierce little macho guys).

My main hobby is...
I have 2 aquariums with angelfishes, electric blue acaras, lots of guppies, small catfish, one platy. The stars of my tanks - hybrid blood parrot cichlid fishes x 3 (they act like puppies).

They really do have a lot of personality, they attack my hand viciously when I clean their tank, so funny. They have very small mouths so it feels like a kiss. These fish have a lot of attitude!

They think they are piranhas? or something scary. They make me laugh. Who knew that pet fish can be a lot of fun?

I wanted to let you know I passed my AANP exam... I have to say I laid my head on the desk and cried. I graduated in May 2018. I took the H---- review course. I took the AANP exam December 2018 and failed. I took F----- review. Her opening statements are, “If you failed the FNP exam your chances of passing …she gave a percentage. If you fail a second time your chances of passing are lower...she gave another percentage of pass rate. My heart sank and I was sick. I never took the exam after her class. The class was complicated and no matter how I tried to study, the information never got into my head. A friend told me about the Leik review and book helped him. He had taken H---- review. But said try Leik.

He wish he had just went with Leik review. I looked up a review course for Leik. On the home page it says, if you have failed the exam, give us a try. I can help you pass. THAT’S ME! All the information was simplified for my understanding. After I took the review course, the nurse I work with, her husband got killed November 22. It left me alone as the RN to carry the work load. Not much study time. She came back to work in March. I began to study, study, study. I signed up to take the AANP exam.
After being out of school for 3 years, I thought it impossible for me to pass but I was not going to let 3 years pass again. I should have NEVER allowed that much time to pass.

I wanted to let you know I have passed the ANCC-FNP! I attended the course online just about one month ago. Before the course, I read your book cover to cover about four chapters per week and all of the exam practice questions. Since finishing the course I have been doing anywhere from 50-200 practice questions per day from BoardVitals and then reading your workbook sections from my weak areas. I will say- I have taken 4 other board exams (NCLEX, pain management, nurse educator, school nurse) and earned a PhD but getting ready for the FNP was the most challenging due to the depth and breadth of topics I needed to prepare for. Hi there! I just took your prep course at the end of April. I got my ATT to test for AANP the following Monday, scheduled my exam for that Thursday and PASSED!!! I am so grateful that I found your course. I mentioned during the review that your review helped me pass an exit exam for my university that was created by a different board prep company. Maria and Angelica I would like to thank you for the review course.  I took it at the end of February, 2021 and sat for my exam yesterday, 7 April 2021.  It was much more relaxed than the previous attempt.  This time I felt you (Maria) provided me with the appropriate information necessary to answer the questions.
I was so frustrated when I did not pass initially that I wanted to just give up but between you and my friend that I went to undergraduate with I knew that was not an option.  The crazy thing is I always want to change my answers but during the exam I constantly heard you saying, "the first answer that comes to your mind is usually the correct answer.  And her saying, "Don't change the answer".
